Four weeks before: decide, book and inform
Start by fixing the shifting date, because the good dates fill up first. Month-end and the first week of a month are busy in Mumbai as many rent agreements end and begin then. If your date is flexible, a mid-month weekday is usually easier to book and easier on the society.
Ask two or three packers and movers for a quote after a video call or a visit, and share the same list of items with each of them. Comparing quotes only works when every company has priced the same goods, floor level and distance.
- Give notice to your landlord or housing society as per your agreement.
- Book packers and movers and confirm the date, arrival time and vehicle size in writing.
- Start a simple inventory: rooms, big furniture, appliances and fragile items.
- Apply for school transfer certificates or admissions if children are changing schools.
Society permission, lift and parking
Many housing societies in Mumbai ask residents to inform the office before moving in or out. Some ask for a no-objection letter, a refundable deposit or a fee, and many fix the hours in which a moving vehicle can enter. The rules differ from one society to the next, so ask the society office at both buildings instead of assuming.
Lift access decides how long loading takes. If the society has a service lift, book it for your slot. If there is no lift, tell the mover in advance because carrying goods down stairs needs extra manpower.
- Ask the old society: permitted shifting hours, service lift booking, gate pass and any deposit.
- Ask the new society the same questions, plus where the truck can park and how far it is from your door.
- Share both addresses with the mover so the right vehicle size is sent for narrow lanes.
- Keep a copy of the permission letter handy for the security guard on the day.
Two weeks before: sort and start packing
- Sort every room into keep, donate and discard. Moving less is the easiest way to move cheaper.
- Pack the things you use least first: off-season clothes, books, decorative items.
- Label every carton with the room name and a short list of contents.
- Photograph the back of your TV, set-top box and router so reconnecting is easy.
- Arrange internet, gas and electricity connections at the new address.
The last two days
Defrost and dry the refrigerator a day before so it does not leak in the truck. Drain washing machine hoses, empty the geyser and keep screws, remote controls and cables in labelled bags taped to the item they belong to.
Keep a small bag with you, not in the truck, with documents, valuables, chargers, medicines, one change of clothes per person and basic kitchen items for the first night.
Moving day
- Be present when packing and loading begin and walk through every room once.
- Check that the inventory list matches what is loaded and keep a copy of it.
- Note the vehicle number and the driver's contact number.
- At the new flat, point out the rooms so cartons are placed where they belong.
- Inspect furniture and appliances while unloading and report any damage straight away.
First week in the new home
Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first so the family can settle quickly. Update your address with the bank, Aadhaar, gas provider, delivery apps and the post office, and tell your insurance provider if the home address is on a policy.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need society permission to shift in Mumbai?
Most housing societies expect residents to inform the society office before moving in or out, and some have fixed timings or a deposit. Rules differ from society to society, so ask the office at both buildings.
How early should I book packers and movers in Mumbai?
Two to four weeks ahead is a comfortable window, and earlier if your date falls at the end or start of a month, when demand is higher.
Should I be present during packing and loading?
Yes. Being present lets you confirm the inventory, point out fragile items and agree on what goes where at the new flat.
