Why monsoon moves need extra care
Water is the biggest risk to household goods. Cardboard cartons lose strength when damp, mattresses and sofas absorb water, wooden furniture can swell and electronics do not tolerate moisture. A short walk from the building to the vehicle in heavy rain is enough to soak an unprotected carton.
Traffic and waterlogging can also slow a move. Low-lying stretches and subways in the city can become difficult to cross after heavy rain, which affects both timing and route.
Choose the day with a buffer
- Check the weather forecast and any rain alerts a few days before and again the evening before.
- Keep one spare date in mind in case the day turns out to be unsuitable.
- Start early. Mornings are often drier and the roads are clearer.
- Tell your mover about the monsoon in advance so they bring enough covers and tarpaulin.
Pack for water, not just for bumps
- Wrap sofas, mattresses and cushions in plastic sheets and tape the joints.
- Use strong cartons and seal them well; for books and documents add a plastic liner inside.
- Keep electronics in their original boxes if you still have them, and add a plastic bag around each.
- Cover wooden furniture with blankets first and plastic on top, so moisture does not sit directly on the surface.
- Keep important papers, laptops and chargers with you in a waterproof bag, not in the truck.
Loading and the walk to the vehicle
Ask the team to keep the vehicle as close to the entrance as the society allows, and to carry items under cover where possible. Place the heaviest and sturdiest pieces at the bottom and cover the whole load with a waterproof sheet before the vehicle moves.
Protect the floors at both homes. Wet footprints on marble or wooden flooring are a slipping risk, so keep old mats or cloth at the entrance.
At the new home
- Unwrap furniture and electronics promptly so trapped moisture can dry.
- Give mattresses and sofas time to air before use.
- Do not switch on appliances that may have got damp until they have dried completely.
- Report any water damage to the mover immediately, with photographs.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to shift house during the monsoon in Mumbai?
Yes, with planning. Waterproof packing, early loading, a covered vehicle and a spare date make a monsoon move manageable.
Should I shift on a day with heavy rain alerts?
It is better to move the date if heavy rain or waterlogging is forecast, because safety of the team, the goods and the roads comes first.
How do I protect electronics while shifting in the rain?
Use the original box if available, wrap the item in plastic and keep it off the floor of the vehicle. Let it dry fully before switching it on at the new home.
